Swims for the Healing Arts
Two summers of Fun and Fundraising
Have you ever walked 9.2 miles? How about swim that distance? That’s just what Beth Kerr, founder of the Glimmerglass Foundation and Glimmerglass Consulting group, accomplished on August 16, 2003 when she swam the length of Lake Otsego in Cooperstown NY. Through the inaugural “Celebrate Life Swim”, Beth’s mission was to raise awareness and financial support for the Healing Art program at Exeter Hospital and generate start-up money for a program in Cooperstown, her home town.
About the swim…
The 2003 swim raised $5000.00, half of which was used to start a Drop-In Healing Art group at Exeter Hospital, where “alumni” of the more structured group may continue to participate on an as-needed basis. Beth and Nan LaMontagne, facilitator of the Healing Art programs, presented the remainder of the funds, as well as three boxes of art supplies, to the Cooperstown Art Association in February, 2004. After some training and with the help of a program manual developed by LaMontagne, the Cooperstown Healing Art program was put in place in the Spring of 2004.
Realizing her life-long dream of swimming the length of Lake Otsego, Beth decided to challenge herself even further this year. She again swam the 9.2 miles of the lake this time with three Cooperstown High School swimmers and ten crew members in kayaks and canoes accompanying her and raising awareness of and money for Art Therapy. The following week, on August 22, she, and several other swimmers entered the north point of Newfound Lake in New Hampshire and swam five miles to the State Beach. The swims of 2004 raised money to support the continued success of both the Exeter and the Cooperstown Art Therapy groups supporting people facing cancer.
