Ripple in the Water

The Glimmerglass FoundationIn 2003 Beth Kerr set about turning a childhood dream into a reality. She set out to train for a long-distance swim of Otsego Lake (a stroke or two over 9 miles). To keep her commitment Beth connected her personal goal to a cause bigger than herself. As she trained for eight months, she cultivated connections with the Healing Arts program at Exeter Hospital in Exeter, New Hampshire to honor her friend, Abigail Phillips, who had benefitted from the support of the program during her struggle with cancer. Beth dedicated her swim to Abigail and raised $5,000 to support the Healing Arts program that provides therapeutic support for people in treatment for cancer.

Beth also decided to give back to her hometown of Cooperstown, New York. She contacted the Cooperstown Art Association in and offered to establish a Healing Arts program there. Artist and cancer survivor, Nan Lamontange, introduced the successful Healing Arts Program to a new community of people dealing with cancer. Beth’s childhood dream to swim a lake created a win-win-win that held her accountable and served two communities.

The Lake Swim continues to be a model to inspire individuals to set stretch goals – both personal and professional - and to take action to achieve them.

Beth has since inspired nine other people to go the distance on Lake Otsego and to be a “Ripple in the Water” that sets positive action in motion. This approach to goal setting is included in Glimmerglass Discover Programs and Professional Coaching Engagements.
